eduroam on the iPhone (and iPod Touch)

by Mark Email

I created a general profile to easily install the settings for the eduroam wireless network on your iPhone.

How it works: load up Safari on your iPhone or iPod Touch and go to:

j.mp/eduroamconfig

That's it ? your iPhone/iPod Touch will load the profile. Install it and type your username (netid@tudelft.nl for the TU Delft) + password and you're done!

Doesn't work at your university? Remove the profile and try the WEP profile instead:

j.mp/eduroamconfig2

You can remove a profile through Settings»General»Profiles.

You can also load any MobileConfig file by emailing it (as an attachment) to your iPhone.

Please check out the Delft University of Technology profile for a version specific to TU Delft, including optional VPN.

I have tried the above mentioned method to configure the settings for Eduroam. When I go to ceaseless.ws/eduroam.mobileconfig I get an error message: Safari can't download this file. Why isn't it working for me?

I have an original iPhone (not a 3G) and I am on firmware 1.1.4

Carlos: You'll need firmware 2.0 to install profiles and to use 802.1x required for eduroam. You can upgrade and unlock your iPhone to firmware 2.0 using PwnageTool.

Yeah I have read a lot about that the last couple of weeks. But where can I download that tool and a clear manual or readme to execute the necessary steps?

Carlos: If you're on a Mac, Google for "PwnageTool_2.0.3.tbz". The tool is very easy to use so you won't really need a manual. If you're on Windows, use WinPwn (http://www.winpwn.com/).

You should download it when you do have a working connection, of course. It should work on any iPod Touch or iPhone with firmware 2.0 or newer.

Hi Mark,

This worked perfectly for eduroam in Groningen. I was wondering if I can make something for a similar network (RuG-FN2). The different networks have different access-rights to specific servers, so sometimes I want to switch between the networks.

There is a profile already: (http://www.van-rijn.org/Misc/iPhoneRuG/), but with this profile I have to give my password each time. How can I change the profile (I noticed that is was partly XML) so that it doesn't ask for a password each time?

Regards,
Michiel

Comment from: Mark [Member] Email · http://mark.weblog.tudelft.nl
Michiel:
The easiest way is to use the iPhone Configuration Utility provded by Apple (http://www.apple.com/support/iphone/enterprise/). You can probably also change the XML, but that'd be a lot more cumbersome than just using the utility.

Hello

I have a ipod touch 2G, which was jailbreaked but after the upgrade
to OS 3.1.1 jaibreak was deleted.

is it necessary to have a jailbreak ipod?

I downloaded the file to my ipod but hte connection failed.

when I open your with the iphone
configuration tool (IPCU.exe)I see
that you used WEP enterprise, for my university it should be WPA enterprise.

how can I change that configuration?

regards

Comment from: Mark [Member] Email · http://mark.weblog.tudelft.nl
Uwe,
- It works on any iPhone or iPod Touch with firmware version >= 2.0, no matter if it's jailbroken.
- The profile might actually work fine with WPA enterprise. Otherwise, use the configuration utility to edit it. Check the manual that comes with it for usage instructions.

Hey,
I have also problems with your created profile...
I have an ipod touch and I'm using version. 3.1.2.

Anyway, I could use eduroam when I was a TUD student. Now I became a TUD employee and I deleted the old eduroam profile. Afterwards I reinstalled the profile with my new TUD-netid and password.
Since that, it does not work anymore. I was thinking whether there is another file on my ipod touch I have to delete and change to my new netid???
cheers, tomtom
2009-12-18 @ 07:32
Comment from: Mark [Member] Email · http://mark.weblog.tudelft.nl
tomtom: that should actually work. Try the more specific profile at http://ceaseless.ws/tudelft.mobileconfig.

If that doesn't work: try removing all eduroam-related profiles and also 'forgetting' the eduroam network (Settings -> Wi-Fi -> eduroam -> Forget) and any other TU-networks you might have tried. Then re-install the profile. After installing, don't try to force a connection to eduroam but simply open Safari and open a webpage.

Tried the TU Delft.mobileconfig and Mark Jansen's eduroam.mobileconfig with the same poor result.
My 3gs seems to be trying to make a connection: looking in "Instellingen" Wi-Fi, it blinks "eduroam" / "Geen verbinding".
A difference with what is said about the installation of Delft.mobileconfig: I do not get the popup window on the certificate?!?!
Sometimes there seems to be a connection for a minute or so.

Mark, to help the people with 2-secs disconnect problems:
try making another profile using the Iphone Configuration Utility, with only a Wifi payload with the following settings: Security = "WEP Enterprise", EAP = "TTLS", Autentication protocol = "PAP". This helped me after a lot of fiddling around using my Iphone at the RUG (University Groningen). Looks like the WPA profile is not working here.

I have tried everything, resetting my internet settings on my phone, installing a blank internet profile to be able to switch with the edorum and my 3G still seems not to work..... Can any1 help me? it seems like my wifi setting are conflicting with my 3G settings...

or it might be a problem with the new software. in the older version of the software this profile worked fine with both wifi and 3G.....

@Brenda: You could try downloading the mobileconfig file and dragging it into iPhone section of your iTunes window.

I couldn't connect my iPhone 4 to Eduroam using these profiles, but I succeeded using the info about connecting an iPad (Google ipad_eduroam_NL.pdf), combined with the link to the TU Delft configuration file: studiolab.io.tudelft.nl/static/gems/mug/TUDelft.zip

It didn't work on my Iphone 3gs. Tried different profiles.
Finally I found out what I did wrong: I forgot to type the .nl after my TU-delft loginname! :-)
Stupid, but now It works with the TU delft luchthaven profile from j.mp/delftconfig

Thanks!

I'm having the same problem as Luis!
My iPhone 4 worked just fine before installing eduroam certificate. After installing it I get: "could not activate cellular data network" when I turn it to 3G... I restored my iPhone 2x before i could understand that the problem just started after installing eduroam certificate. :( Does anyone else is having the same problem.. any solutions?

I have the same problem. Before installing eduroam my WiFi worked perfectelly, but after downloading eduroam it didn't work anymore. I already deleted my eduroam account, and restored my iPodTouch twice. It still doesn't work. Please anyone can help me????

Both do not work at University of Amsterdam (Academic Medical Center), unfortunately. Am I doing something wrong?

Thank you very much!
The second one works perfect at the University of the Basque Country.

Works like a charm at Erasmus University, thanks!

For EUR students: use the second config file and your full login-name
(like: 123456ab@eur.nl)

Hi Mark) Thanks a lot for the profile. It works perfectly (Chalmers and Göteborgs Universitet). It's said in the manuals for eduroam, that iPhone can easily be connected to network. No way!!!! Anyway, thanks again))

It works at my university: Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm (KTH). But I noticed that it does work fine even if you do not install the general profile but just enter your username and password. I think that it has made even easier to log in to the eduroam network.

Does this work for iOS5? Does anyone know how to install eduroam profile for iOS5 for TU Delft?

Op tu delft kun je tegenwoordig verbinden met visitor netwerk en daar, zonder te hoeven inloggen, staat een download bestandje... Nergens last van!

If your school uses Eduroam it should work just fine.

Hey

I tried using the internet after installing your profile, but it keep telling me that I can’t connect.
Then I check through the program and was wondering it my problem may be cause by the fact that the signature algorithm expires 28/10/11?

Comment from: Mark [Member] Email · http://mark.weblog.tudelft.nl
That's probably the signing date, not the expiry date. The profile should still work.

"@tudelft.nl" achter.
